[TOMB SERIES] Why Tomb Finance?

Let’s address that degen zombie in the room: what the hell is the point of having a token that’s pegged to the price of $FTM when you could just use $FTM itself instead?

Before we dive into what Tomb could mean for you as an investor, let’s break down the potential impact of Tomb’s long-term success on the Fantom ecosystem as a whole.

For Fantom to continue running as the fast, secure, and cost-effective blockchain we all know and love, its validator nodes will continue to rely on its $FTM token remaining staked and locked up.

The network’s growth has driven speculators to place heavy buy pressure on $FTM as its value increases, and this has ironically led to a congested, illiquid market. You might remember multiple bridges had to be shut down, and there was an announcement issued by the Fantom Foundation about the liquidity issue. There just isn’t enough Opera-native $FTM to go around.

If Tomb succeeds in holding the peg, this will create a mirrored, liquid asset that can be moved around and traded without restrictions, all while benefitting from the price appreciation of the native $FTM token. Reaching the peg and holding the peg is crucial, and this will ultimately be what drives the value of TOMB for investors. In the short term, this would mean attractive APRs for liquidity providers on what would essentially be a stable pair.

So, once a liquid market is the norm, what happens next? What are some other reasons you’d want to hold $TOMB?

$TOMB aims to become the primary utility token of the Fantom ecosystem, and the first step is its role in FTMpad, Fantom’s first incubator & launchpad. The selection, development, and deployment of the next generation of Fantom DeFi projects will be decided by those who hold TShare, Tomb’s governance token (affectionately referred to as “the money printer” by gravediggers). Oh, and we’re just getting started.

Gatekeeper Cheesecake (Gatekeeper Explained)

To start, if you have not already, go check out the first article in the series above.

As decentralized finance calmly and carefully inches its way cross the chain to the vastly expanding underworld of Fantom Opera, “the fat lady” begins to sing. All the frogs begin to ribbit and croak. All the cats begin to purr and meow. All the alchemists poke the fires under their cauldrons. For they know, the Gatekeeper from Tomb Finance is somewhere lurking in the shadows beneath a waning crescent moonlight.

For those that dipped into the first article in the series, you will recall it mentioned the importance of “freeing up” FTM tokens. That is indeed a big positive driver of value for the TOMB token. But, it could be an even bigger driver of Fantom’s future success because as a decentralized network, Fantom needs to get as many FTM tokens staked and delegated to validators as possible. Or utilized to get new nodes up and running to better maintain its fast, cheap, secure, and decentralized network. One way to think of the TOMB token is as a metaphorical Skeleton Key. “A type of masterkey…reduced to its essential parts” that is capable of opening “numerous locks.”

“Hmm, what the heck does some animated zombie Gatekeeper system have to do with that?”
Let’s get into it mate.

At time of writing, 1 TOMB token = ₀.40 USD/1.84 FTM. Now go back to the table on the right side of the Gatekeeper where it says “TAX FEE”. You’ll notice that the Gatekeeper’s Tax Fee currently sits at 1% (why? because atow 1 TOMB = 1.84 FTM; 1.84 FTM > 1.5 FTM) on every sale of TOMB, no matter the quantity being sold. The Tax Fee even applies on creation of LP tokens.

To those of you who have made the decision to deposit into one of the auto-compounders (e.g. reaper.farm), the young Tomb DAO gives thanks.

Here is how Tomb.Finance is handling the Tax Fee moolah, by adding a fee that will be turned into extra liquidity on every sell transaction when the price is too far away from peg, the community as a whole helps the protocol to make growth stronger as fast as possible.

So, we good on the fees so far? Good. Let’s continue. As I mentioned earlier, the Tax Fee at time of writing sits at 1% and 1 TOMB = ₁.84 FTM. *Keep in mind we are speaking in terms of FTM not USD price. Well what if we get a nice, juicy FTM pump, that pushes the value of 1 TOMB down in relation to 1 FTM token. For example, the pump results in 1 TOMB = 1.05 FTM, what would the Tax Fee be at this point? A whopping 15%.

And do not forget all the Tax Fees that would be collected and added to the pool on the whole ride down to this new value. Think back to auto-compounding protocols as well…

Although the Gatekeeper System may seem harsh to some, the Gatekeeper is a tried-and-true friend of all Zombies.
The system is designed to be optimized via governance voting by stakers of TSHARE tokens. The TSHARE token is not currently used for governance but will act as the governance token eventually, hopefully sooner than later.

Stay tuned because more news is coming soon with details about how exactly the TSHARE token will be used within the Tomb DAO. Also being able to put TSHARE (and TOMB) to work outside of Tomb Finance is near the top of the to-do list.

TSHARE also can serve to generate yield by staking your TSHARE in the Masonry to earn TOMB tokens or by opting to deposit your FTM-TSHARE Spookyswap LP tokens into the farm at the Cemetery to earn TSHARE farming rewards. The TSHARE-FTM farm will be ongoing in the Cemetery for 12-months. What happens after the 12-months are over? TBD.

Remember, staking TSHARE in the Masonry only rewards TOMB tokens when TOMB is in an expansion phase based on TWAP. This could lead to an interesting scenario: If TOMB falls below the peg, the Masonry stops rewarding TOMB tokens to TSHARE stakers but the Tax Fee applied on selling TOMB tokens increases to 15% and applies the auto-burn.
Lots of fun things to consider as you can imagine.

Whichever strategy you choose is up to you. We just ask you to do your own research before you invest your hard-earned money into anything.

To wrap things up here near the end I decided to cast some light on a few charts from the CoinGecko and toss in a broad comparison for dessert. The 1st is the TOMB token chart and the 2nd is the FTM token chart.

These graphs show that after roughly 3 weeks following the Tomb.Finance launch, TOMB appears to be approaching a less volatile price range as well as approaching the value of 1 FTM token.

FYI: Tomb.Finance launched its Genesis Pools on June 2.

Perhaps this more stable price range merits a more cautious approach from investors as they are becoming more aware of what an angry Gatekeeper might look like if TOMB drops a bit more and/or FTM pamps; or, there is real value seen in the potential use cases of a successfully mirrored asset on OPERA.

Whatever the reason may be, the stability can be visualized.
Time for dessert. A comparison to the ETH-backed stable, RAI, on Ethereum, shows a similarity in the time after launch (₃ weeks) at which RAI entered the zone where it is now and has been for over 90 days. Remember, this is just a comparison of the two timelines and volatility of two unique stablecoin projects, not a comparison of the individual protocols. It is interesting to say the least.

Just to be clear, the Gatekeeper system is not viewed as a standalone solution to keep TOMB at the peg. It is very likely that the success of the system will be heavily reliant on integration throughout the OPERA ecosystem. The first two real use cases for the TOMB token are right around the corner with some extremely exciting stuff involving Spookyswap, Yel.Finance, and the FTMPAD-which is on express delivery!

Expansions of the Tomb Dao

In this section, we will discuss expansion phases and tie things back to the Tomb DAO as we go.
As per your traditional seigniorage project, Tomb Finance has defined epoch lengths. An epoch length may be arbitrarily defined based on a start block number/end block number or in any given temporal increment; e.g., Tomb Finance chose 1 epoch = 6 hours.

The second factor at hand is the current Circulating Supply of TOMB tokens because Tomb Finance determines the rate of expansion/contraction of the TOMB token supply based on the Circulating Supply of TOMB. As long as TWAP > 1 FTM, the Tomb Finance system will be in an expansion phase. Let us have a glance at this chart from the docs (begin at the box in the top left):

At time of writing, the Circulating Supply of TOMB tokens is 2,760,346.
So, we should direct our attention to the box in the center which shows that when Circulating Supply > 2,000,000, new TOMB tokens are minted at a rate of 2.5% (the expansion rate) of the Circulating Supply following the end of each epoch (1 epoch = 6 hours).

These new TOMB tokens are not carelessly thrown into the market to be insta-dumped. 80% of the distribution of new TOMB tokens is exclusively routed to those that have staked TSHARE tokens in the Masonry. To go a step further, if a user decides to only perform a “Claim” to receive their TOMB token rewards, they will not be able to perform a claim again for 3 epochs (18hrs) and the claim will restart the 6-epoch (36hrs) long period a user must wait to un-stake their TSHARE tokens from the Masonry.

However, a user may opt to perform a “Claim and Withdraw”, which will still distribute the TOMB token rewards to the user’s wallet but also perform an un-stake and send the previously staked TSHARE tokens to the user’s wallet.
Just be aware of the fact that any action taken in the Masonry results in a reset of both timers, the 3-epoch claim timer and the 6-epoch un-stake/withdraw timer. A user is allowed to stake TSHARE tokens as often as they like and yes, staking will reset both timers.

So, let us take a minute to do the math to determine what the next distribution of newly minted TOMB tokens will be. Or feel free to skip this.

2.5% expansion rate * 2,760,346 circulating supply = ~ 69,008 TOMB tokens minted into circulation.

With this number a user can determine how many TOMB tokens they will receive as rewards for staking their TSHARE in the Masonry from the next distribution. Simply divide the number of TSHARE tokens you have staked in the Masonry by the total number of TSHARE tokens staked in the Masonry. Then, multiply that number by 59,206 TOMB tokens.

But why not multiply by 69,008?

If you recall, we are only looking at the distribution to the Masonry. The Tomb DAO and the core team receive their own unique allocations. According to the docs, 80% of the TOMB token rewards go to the Masonry, 18% to the DAO fund, and 2% to the DEV fund.

Thankfully, the Tomb Finance team has committed to transparency in this regard.

The Regulations page shown below provides a breakdown of how each batch of newly minted TOMB tokens gets distributed. What is interesting to notice about these distributions, is that the number of TOMB tokens distributed does not always increase from one epoch to the next (if TOMB value is high enough it remains possible for the overall value distributed to be greater). For instance, compare the Total TOMB tokens distributed in epoch 66 to the Total TOMB tokens distributed in epoch 67. The difference is more than 8,000 TOMB tokens. This is caused by the dynamic nature of the expansion rate because the expansion rate only changes when Circulating Supply of TOMB changes, OR, when TOMB is in a contraction phase (TWAP < 1 FTM). Other than that, price and rate of expansion are independent from one another.

The second column from the left in the Regulations table represents the number of new TOMB tokens that were distributed to the TSHARE stakers and makes it simple to estimate your expected TOMB rewards for the upcoming distributions. One might also look at this table and think, “the Tomb DAO is laughing to the bank!” Well, yes, and no to be fair. One way to put it is to say that the Tomb DAO must be well equipped to weather the mother of all storms. Long-term stability is the goal. And, although our friendly Gatekeeper does one helluvah job, he cannot stand alone forever. The bags of TOMB he totes from Tax Fees will likely become a load. It is a question of “when” not “if’’ this will ever happen. All is possible in crypto. That is fact.

The Tomb DAO understands this and has chosen to act as a mechanism of last resort should TOMB holders start to tolerate the higher Tax Fees in large volumes. Here it is important to remember that the Tax Fee can be adjusted (up or down) to accommodate for unpleasant weather (reinforcements for the backup, if you will). Thus far, the auto-compounding of rewards in combination with the Tax Fee, have been a value add for the Tomb DAO fund. Flashback Friday to the Tomb DAO wallet on June 5. The TSHARE token price has made a nice move to the upside recently after the Gatekeeper system was put through a minor test yet did its job in off-gassing sell pressure to help keep TOMB footed just above the peg (Zoo Chart shows TOMB ATL to be ₁.185 FTM on June 30). It has been over 80 epochs (nearly 3 weeks) and TOMB still has yet to go through a single contraction phase.

For now, all is well, and the Gatekeeper enjoys his cheesecake more than ever. TOMB is making itself comfortable in a more stable range of values, the time TSHARE spends staked in the Masonry has proven worthwhile, and we have the FTMPAD being cooked up with just the right amount of flavor.

Another Expansion?

The Tomb Finance and Millennial Finance merger and acquisition is a first on Fantom OPERA.

What a speedy start to the month of July it has been! Yet still so much is on its way!
Yesterday, we were blessed with the announcement that Millennial Finance (ticker: MLNL) has planted its roots in the Tomb Finance ecosystem. Not to worry friends; if you are not familiar with Millennial Finance, a link to their docs is included near the bottom of this article. ICYMI, here are a few recent highlights of the two protocols:

What exactly is Millennial Finance trying to accomplish?

It says plainly in this image from MLNL’s site, “We’re preparing experiments in various cross-chain areas.” The MLNL docs tell us that the protocol has big goals in mind. The biggest one being to turn Millennial Finance into a one-stop shop for zaps into any farm across any network in Defi. (e.g. use wETH on Ethereum to zap into a LP position in the farms in the Cemetery at Tomb Finance) And it may not stop there.

The Millennial DAO is the governing body of the next-gen cross-chain Defi Suite the MLNL team are building together with Tomb Finance. Tis a mutualistic relationship — z80dev from Millennial Finance has been onboarded to the Tomb Finance core team, and Tomb Finance will immediately begin to assist Millennial Finance within areas needing support.

Now let us talk about what we know about the MLNL token.
In what manner the MLNL token will be used across the various chains will be voted on by the Millennial DAO. The initial allocations of the MLNL token cross-chain may overtime need to be rebalanced or new liquidity may be demanded on a new chain — Millennial DAO will govern this. One thing that comes to mind that would benefit the #TombRaiders would be a permanently reduced fee on one or both Cemetery farms.

What else we know about the token is that it is planned to be, “the medium of exchange for all of Millennial’s Cross-Chain functionalities.” This means there will be an immediate use-case for the MLNL token when it arrives.
Hope you paid good attention to the part in their docs where it states they want to start their own cross-chain yield aggregator…and soon^tm.

There is no confirmed launch date at this point, but we do know the MLNL token will be minted on Ethereum, and perhaps an airdrop is incoming to reward the loyal Millennials who demonstrated their support early on.

Eternal Burn

The previous article discussed the first M&A to happen on OPERA along with some recent performance highlights of Tomb Finance and Millennial Finance. If you did not catch that message, check it out here on Medium or here on discuss.fantom.digital.

It was a cool, arid night…

clink!…clink! sounds off the chipped and battered shovel as its hardened steel caroms off a piece of newly exposed bedrock.

The Gatekeeper has run out of room. What once was a barren canyon floor now sprawls densely peppered with Tombs between the towering plateaued rocks. Time is of the essence. Tomb must be disposed of efficiently, and it awaits the Gatekeeper in proliferating piles.

Our friendly Gatekeeper is even feeling taxed. With the recent hike in Tax Fees, heftier collections demanded by the Tomb DAO have taken their toll. Finally, after much exertion, the Gatekeeper’s shovel grew heavier, and the depth of his excavations diminished. He paused to catch his breath amidst the dust and sweat when an idea sparked within his hollow head in form of poem:

“Too much Tomb to bury or carry.”

“The weakhanded and weakhearted have reason to be wary.”

“Struggle stresses strength of strong minds to be merry.”

“Use deadwood tree to burn Tomb and serve cheesecake with cherry.”

And so the Gatekeeper took to piling bushels upon bushels of TOMB across the neighboring moonlit Savanna, and initiated what feels hot enough to be the beginning of an eternal burn…

Tomb DAO will ultimately decide the fate of the prescribed burns of TOMB on the Savanna. Governance is second to the launch of FTMPAD on the list of priorities. Audit is, at time of writing, in progress with ObeliskOrg. fSoon completion.

The broad effects of the auto-burn during times like these are noteworthy for Tomb Finance. Some cool and interesting things also happen when burns occur in nature. Various species exhibit unique responses when faced with adaptive challenges arising from spontaneous changes in local environments. Nature can be incredibly insightful in many respects. I will let you dig that bunny hole if you choose. Avion and tunneling creatures are just a couple examples.

In this article we will be going straight into a few of the widgets Tomb.Finance has at play when the value of 1 TOMB < 1 FTM. The finer details will be left for you to uncover.

One question to answer straight out of the gate: “are we pegged, or nah?”

All in all, it appears as though the use-cases are not just being talked about, but they are rapidly approaching fruition…

Yel.Finance just announced that their code passed the audit. Millennial.Finance is over there doing random, stealth-like flash photography. Scream is prepping to go through a seed phase for pastel ticket holders, followed up by the FTMPAD incubation.

Most significantly, the Tomb.Finance community and ecosystem is flourishing. Historically, in nature, strong, close bonds amongst members of a community are proven to be positive drivers of success for a population. Do not ask me how this applies to the undead.

One thing should be clear by this point, a contraction epoch is where the real value will shine if there are enough symmetrical avenues for light to pass unobstructed. The core team at Tomb Finance has a big appetite for use-cases.

RIP to a few (there are many others) ones that came before us with a similar vision. The Tomb DAO and the Gatekeeper are here defending the line. And they say come and take it…

Keep your fingers crossed that we do not catch a case of Bactitanesdosis. A system like the Gatekeeper makes Tomb Finance distinguishable from its predecessors but does not give 100% immunity. Arbitrary injections of liquidity by the Tomb DAO will be a heavily tested strategy, and overtime other means of administration will need to be explored.

The road ahead is far less traveled.

Unlike your average token, TBONDs are designed to be an illiquid asset which can only be obtained by spending TOMB, if any TBONDs are available.
